Tenuta Villanovaresults 1-1 of 1
April 1499. The lease for all the mansi or “hides” of land that the Chapter of Aquileia possessed at Sabrida – today’s Mainizza – and Villanova was renewed to Pietro di Strassoldo. This is what we learn from the manuscript conserved in the archive of the Seminary of Gorizia, which marks the birth of Tenuta Villanova. It is not known exactly what crops were grown on those hides of land but vines were certainly cultivated, as we know they had been since Roman times. Wine was an important resource, a fact testified by more than two centuries of ample documentary evidence from the Strassoldo family, which owned the estate until 1836. Even then, they were recommending “to rip out vines of inferior quality” and the decision to produce “excellent and genuine” wine was adopted by subsequent owners, including the noble Marchesi Concina from Udine and the Conti Tommaseo from Venice. In 1869, Alberto Levi, the owner of the day, offered hospitality to Louis Pasteur, who was in Friuli to pursue his studies. Pasteur was able to observe that the wines of Villanova were in no way inferior to the more famous products of his homeland, France. A more recent visitor to Tenuta Villanova was Professor Giovanni Dalmasso, considered one of the founders of modern Italian viticulture and oenology, who stayed here to further his researches. In 1932, the property was purchased by Arnaldo Bennati and even today is owned by the same family in the person of Giuseppina Grossi Bennati. Today’s hides of land bring together tradition and innovation, as is right for an estate that has been active for more than 500 years in the heart of Friuli and history.
