The 2013 Thalassitis Oak Fermented is wood-aged Assyrtiko, the emphasis there on wood, since some barrels are actually Acacia (10% new), the rest French oak (70% new; 20% used). It comes in at 13.0% alcohol and it is dry, of course. Revisited this issue for a checkup, this is right on track. Yes, the wood is the first thing that assaults your senses, on the nose and on the palate, but this has fine acidity and the wine works it out somehow. Showing fine tension on the finish, this coats the palate and seems full bodied. The trick here, though, will be to use this with food. With the wood overlay, it will seem far better balanced with food than without. Overall, it is developing nicely and has plenty of life left.

The 2013 Thalassitis Oak Fermented has not been in our marketplace until recently, so it is nice to see here. It was aged for five months in French oak (80% new, 20% second-use). Despite many rants about oak not working for Assyrtiko, I have to say ? it does. We all have our personal preferences, to be sure, but people like Gai?a and others on the island have proved that it cannot only work, but work well. The food matchup may be different, to be sure. That said, this is amazingly graceful, gentle and approachable, with reasonably well-integrated wood and a velvety texture that is sensual on the palate. It is not the biggest or most concentrated Thalassitis, but finishes with a burst of flavor. It goes down easy, and the fruit and acidity eventually rise above the oak and slice through it. This will show better in a couple of years as the oak integrates, but it is showing pretty well today, too. Forget your preconceptions many folks will like this a lot. There were 9,972 bottles made. Drink now-2020
